Getting Certified: Our Open Water Diver Journey

Published: Category:ScubaWritten by: MustBTV
My sons Jarrett, Shawn and I officially became certified SSI Open Water Divers on January 28, 2025, marking the true beginning of our underwater journey. The course was completed through Dive World Scuba – North, under the guidance of instructor Christina Burenga (#99114).

The training included confined water sessions, theory modules, and four open water dives at Aquarena Springs / Spring Lake and North Park, Canyon Lake. We learned foundational skills: buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery, and safe ascent techniques.

For us, this course was more than a checklist — it was a bonding experience. We dove together, worked through nerves, and emerged stronger and more confident. I still remember the moment Shawn gave the OK signal underwater after nailing his buoyancy hover — a proud dad moment for sure.

This certification also opened the door to everything else we’re planning: Deep Diver, Nitrox, Wreck, Navigation… it all started here. It’s not just about getting a card — it’s about gaining the skills and comfort to dive with confidence and purpose.
